Lecture 10: tobacco - corporate obfuscation and public power. Tobacco history: use in americas for hundreds of years as medicinal and ceremonial, addictive properties reported from late 16th century jesuit: the fondness they have for this herb is beyond all belief. Something that showed how the white race had fallen : campaign failed for several reasons, done by respectable citizens , state involvement inappropriate in private affair, catholic and protestant churches resented state interference in moral regulation. Tobacco sinful in extremes, not moderation: to what degree should the state interfere with the lives of its citizens, only success was to limit sale to >15 year. Lacked self-control to smoke, fragile: a threat to their reproductive value, smoke carved spaces out as male - women in these places risked their respectability, before wwi, <5% of women smoked. Additionally, very shocking to many, but paved way for smoking to be accessible to women: although smoking declined, cessation slower among young women.
