Different treatment models are beneficial to different people and not all treatments will work for all people. Rather than blaming the individual, addiction a result of: agent, consumer & environment. Emphasis on preventing/delaying substance use; enabling individuals with coping methods to respond to substances and addiction. Universal prevention: age restrictions, package warnings, advertising limits. Selective prevention: teaching kids refusal skills" (ex. Indicated prevention : preventing discrimination, as it fosters marginalization to which people cope with using drugs. Substance use and addiction are inevitable; it"s not possible to eliminate. Should concentrate on impacts (hiv, losing one"s job, health problems, overdosing, etc. ) Humanity: harm reduction articulates the notion of the addict as a human being, as someone who has rights. Avoids moralizing - focus is not on moral duties; judgement-free. Pragmatic: people use drugs because they benefit from them. May act to reduce overall costs to society (less disease transmission, reduces hospital costs, less criminals in the prison system, etc. )
