Lecture 5 gender, sexuality, and mental health. Gender as something one does, sex as something one has: sex is binary, gender is anything but that far more complicated. Hegemonic masculinity: aggression, competitiveness, independence rationality, avoiding vulnerability: some emotions (anger, aggression) prioritized over others (sadness, fear). Compliance w/ subordination to men, accommodating needs/desires of men. Multiple masculinities and femininities dominant forms subordinate other expressions of masculinity and femininity: ex. Heterosexuality are held as superior to inferior sexualities , such as homosexuality. Real difference in wellbeing and psychopathology, based on physiological differences: pms and post-partum depression to anti-social personality disorder, assumptions linked to hormones: empathy, cooperation, nurturing as products of female sex hormones. Rational and spatial understanding, competitive behaviours, violence as a result of male sex hormones. Real differences based on social conditions: ex. Real differences based on socialization: taught to behave and experience the world differently, men externalize, women internalize. False differences based on research and diagnostic bias: ex.
