Was a period of challenging conventions and norms. In the 19th century we decided to build these massive asylums and the intake of people coming in was going higher and higher. Psychoanalysis from freud ideas were very dominant in the beginning of the century was popular but at this time questions arose shaking things up. Thus, in the 50s-60s psychiatry is at a vulnerable place. The attacks on psychiatry come from within -- psychiatrists themselves making these attacks. Mental illness as a socio-cultural construction of the 18th century. The enlightenment gave birth to the notion that madness was in fact mental illness. Instead of something being understood socially or religiously, etc. it is shaped as something like a disease -- something that needs to be fixed.
