Mental illness as a spiritual problem (possession, problematic relationship w/ god) Mental illness as a balance problem (now our dominant conception) (ying/yang, bodily humours) Somatic (of the body) problem (pyschopharmaceuticals) (ibn-sina- he located mental illness in the brain) Mental illness is a personal problem (moral failing, no such thing) Mental illness social problem (poverty, naomi wolf- feminist who wrote book and says western society puts too big emphasize on beauty) It"s a biological disease, causes physical malfunction in the brain. A physical disorder- it has symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. Mental disorder arises from internal mental processes that reflect the interaction of the ind w/ environment. Some ppl have more resources and more respected roles in their lives. Stress might cause mental illness, or power structure is labelling it (hording has been labelled as a disorder that"s not good)
