Affect: behaviour that others see, physical expression of mood (facial expression, pitch of voice and body movement) Mood: sustained emotional response, can colour one"s perception of the world: lasts for days, hours or months, determined by affect. Emotion: transient and responsive to thoughts, activities and social situations. Mood has a haloing effect: colour past present and future experiences (potent) Types: major depressive disorder (clinical depression, bipolar disorder (manic depression, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Determined by episodes: discrete period of time where behaviour and feelings are dominated by mania or depression. One or more depressive episodes without mania. Five or more symptoms during a two week that are a change from previous functioning. Symptoms: depressed mood most of the day. Different than sadness: mood change is pervasive and doesn"t get better even temporarily, no stimulus needed for mood change or mood disproportionate to stimulus, impaired social/occupational functioning, being consumed by black cloud .
