Emerged as disinct group of disorder in dsm iii (most important bc it fundamentally changed rules of how the book was writen) Dsm i-ii based on psychoanalysis (focused on cause) Dsm iii came up with symptomaic diagnoses, threw away psychoanalyic psych and embraced biological psych (these are actually exising diseases rooted in brain best treated through psych drugs) Previously part of neuroses (persistent emoional disturbance, where person was aware of problem and in touch with reality) Awareness dropped in dsm-5 now merely necessary for fear and worry to be. E. g. air traic controller with inside info who fears plane crashes disproporionate. Spliing movement has divided anxiety disorders, share core symptom: intense worry that is disproporionate to actual environmental danger. Asylums primarily housed psychoic individuals and those who couldn"t remain in community. Anxiety didn"t really it into that equaion. Not understood as being mentally ill no category for anxiety, no treatment.
