Since asylums are not curing institutions, they changed it so that it doesnt just contain ppl, but also cures it, like a hospital. Transformation of madness into mental illness, madhouse becomes a therapeutic facility. Mad was free to work in the land. These people were not physicians, they were quakers (a religious minority) they set up the york retreat as a revolutionary idea. Rather than looking at mad ppl as monsters, they saw them as sick people in need of care. Rather than punishing ppl, locking them up, they gave these people daily things to do.
