HLTHAGE 2G03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Postpartum Depression, Hegemonic Masculinity, Orgasm
Document Summary
Health and aging 2gg3: mental health and society. Gender something one does, sex is something one has: sex is binary, but gender is far more fluid. Hegemonic masculinity: ^dominant, becomes like a norm in which people can measure or compare. Emphasized femininity: what we typically think about as girlish, being very sensitive, being moody, etc. Both hm and ef work to facilitate patriarchy. Multiple masculinities and femininities- dominant forms subordinate other expressions: eg. Real differences in wellbeing and psychopathology based on physiological differences: this outlook is more binary and somatically simple. Pms and post partum depression to aspd: explained with reference to hormones, empathy cooperation, nurturing as products of female sex hormones, rational and spatial understanding, competitive behaviour, violence, as result of male sex hormone. Real difference based on socialization and social conditions: defined by your career, but making it difficult to have a good career would make this an issue for women.
