HLTHAGE 1CC3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Eugen Bleuler, Emil Kraepelin, Dementia Praecox
Document Summary
Mental health lecture 2b: schizophrenia, psychotic, and delusional disorders (part ii) The term schizophrenia was not invented until 1908; the concept wasn"t invented until the late 19th century. Hippocrates (famous ancient greek physician) described a girl who heard voices and those voices convinced her to jump into a well. This sounds like auditory hallucinations, a symptom of schizophrenia. However, we don"t have any other evidence that schizophrenia is the appropriate diagnosis. Hare: recency hypothesis: explains 19th century epidemic and rarity of previous descriptions. Various symptoms that had been classified as distinct disorders should be grouped together - dementia praecox (over time people would lose their cognitive abilities, starting in adolescence) Didn"t always start in adolescence nor result in dementia - proposed schizophre- nia (greek term; split mental associations) Considered negative symptoms far more important than positive symp- toms. Schizophrenia is not just a single disease; it should be referred to, like cancer (there are many variations of schizophrenia)
