Lecture 1a intro to mental health and illness. Most mental disorders effect all 3 areas. The person has a problematic relationship with god. This person sins all the time and does not follow the rules of god, so he is being possessed by spirits and that is why he suffers from a mental illness (schizophrenia) Mental illness is the result of a physical problem in the brain. Have to develop consciousness around bad events and then bringing them to light to feel better. Also takes an individualized approach, similar to the medical model. Mind and brain are not the same thing. Mental illness is about learned behaviour and not on physiological illness or psychological conflict. Society as genesis of mental illness (specifically in the way it is structured) Mental illness is a label most of the time, made by people of higher standing such as psychiatrists. Different explanations seem to work for different disorders.
