Medical model (biological model: treated as a biological disease like any other organ in the body, except specific to the brain, symptoms: profound sadness or problems with attentiveness, biomarkers: property of the body that indicates disease. Individually focused: do not have specific biomarkers for mental illness, treatment: drugs, phsychopharmaceuticals, an attempt to cut others out. Psychological model: mental disorder arises from internal mental processes that reflect the actions of the individual with their environment, disorder is found in the mind, not physical in brain, treatment: therapies such as psychodynamics. Alternative definition: significant and involuntary deviations from what is usually considered normal behaviours in a particular group or society. Ignores context of person being diagnosed: focused on symptoms rather than experience, does not address treatment/therapy. The difficult of diagnoses: co-morbidity, person can share symptoms of multiple disorders at any given time, race/gender/class/obesity biases, culture, britain"s see disorders differently than americans, some diagnoses never make it into dsm, self defeating personality disorder.
