Symptoms of schizophrenia: divided into positive (acute) and negative (chronic, significantly misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder in adults and autism in children. Positive symptoms: means in addition to normality. Hallucinations: false sensory experience, hearing voices no one else can, often frightening. Negative symptoms: deficit, something that people would expect to be present in human being. Cognitive/disorganized symptoms: deals with a deficit in some way, cognitive disturbance (memory attention, disorganized speech, shifts topic abruptly, responds with irrelevant response, bizarre motor behaviours, list demonstrates substantial variability of what we deem schizophrenia. Schizophrenia epidemiology: statistical approach to looking at disorder and disease; how prevalent a disease/disorder is in a population. Etiology: men and women are equally diagnosed, onset age of 15-35, don"t know specific cause, lots of stakeholders, who"s at fault who can fix it. Refrigerator mothers: describe the cold parenting style of mothers of children with schizophrenia and autism, angry parents felt blamed for what was increasingly understood as a brain disease.
