Classification of anxiety disorders: emerged as distinct group of disorders in the dsm-iii, previously part of "neuroses" (emotional disturbance with awareness) Rise of interest in anxiety: asylums primarily housed psychotic individuals and those deemed too dangerous to remain in community, anxiety did not really fit into the equation. Freud"s emphasis on neuroses helped reshape 20th century as the age of anxiety. Agoraphobia: extreme fear about situations where escape is difficult or embarrassing - crowded shops, theatres, tunnels, not about proximity to a specific object, but distance from "safety" Seen as a complex and incapacitating phobia disorder. Performance, presentations, going to parties: controversial because people can"t distinguish between normal anxiety and performance anxiety of a social anxiety disorder, originates in fear of being humiliated or embarrassed. If anxiety occurs as a response to a specific situation (eg. a speech), the anxiety will disappear if the task is performed privately.
