HLTHAGE 1CC3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Biopsychosocial Model, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Bipolar Disorder
Document Summary
Lecture 2: how do we de ne mental health and illnesses. Is a disease of the brain: improper levels of neurotransmitters, genetic abnormality, unusual brain structure. Each mental illness is considered a distinct disease, individualized. Dominates our thinking about mental illness + treatments. Ect: run an electrical current through the brain to induce a seizure. Disagreements between medical model supporters (physical structure vs. in ammation vs. chemical imbalance vs. genetics) Only medical professionals can treat, not psychologists or social workers. These studies are not reliable because cannot be repeated. Brain scans are done after diagnoses so don"t know if the scans are showing affects of the disease or the treatment drugs. Looks at mental illness as something that occurs with the mind. Brain is the organ - the physical thing. Believe that mental disorders arise from internal mental processes that re ect the interaction of the individual with her environment.
