Lecture 20: the psychopharmaceutical revolution: pas and present. Not very good as an anesthetic ; not enough to put them to sleep. End to massive institutions; changed the way large hospitals managed b/c the patients were much calmer. End of psychoanalytic dominance, start of medical model dominance. Explosion of curiosity in biology of mental illness in the 1950s. Lsd --> psychiatrists were prescribing themselves lsd to understand the experience of schizophrenia ; lsd experience allowed people to reflect upon their own lives in ways they never had ; people w/ terminal cancer are taking. Lsd to find peace w/ the fact that they"re dying. Miltown extends beyond psych circles -- minor tranquilizer. Industry and pharmacies couldn"t keep up w/ demand. Emotional problems like a women"s frigidity, bride"s uncertainty, and wife"s infidelity. Keeping women in place-- i. e. those who wanted to keep wartime jobs, education, singledom, or to reject husband"s advances (was after wwii)
