One or more major depresevie episodes without mania. Five positive symptoms during two week peropd: depressed mood most of day. Persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia) chronic, but less severe than mdd. Bereavement exclusion if person has lost family member / friend, they cannot be diagnosed with depression even if they have above symptoms this is mourning. Greater professional autonomy or widening the boundaries of illness. Only excepted from dsm if lasts 2 months (or less). Women 3x more likely for depression, slightly more likely for bd (3:2 ratio: gender differences in seeking treatment. Women have higher mood-impacting hormones than men. Stressful life events, especially childhood adversity sexual violence, difference in pay, stereotypes, etc. Rates of depression have been on the rise each year/generation and younger onset. 10x more likely to become depressed than our grandparents in 1960 average age for the fist depressive episode was 30, now less than 15.
