HISTORY 1M03 Lecture : History of Greece and Rome-Jan.30 Athens and the Delian League
Document Summary
Athenian overstretch in boeotia: spartans confront the athenians over boeotia. January 30: truce of 446, revolt of samos wanted to leave the delian league; athenian"s squashed revolt, 433/2: athenians vs. megara. Athenians banned all spartans from trade markets, athens inspired to take over megara in order to control sparta: 433: athens vs. corinth over corcyra. Bring corcyra into the athenian army: 432 corinth vs. athens over potidaea, sparta declared athenians in violation of their truce and were at war. Hoplites walked into attica expecting athenian army; no hoplite warriors: rules and rituals of hoplite warfare reflected the interests of the citizen- farmer-soldiers. All tactics, no strategy; one city"s phalanx against the other. Conduct on the battlefield was regulated by warfare ritual; no pursuit of retreating soldiers, only the erection of a trophy; sufficient victory. Concession of defeat acknowledged through asking for permission to retrieve dead from the battlefield.
