Document Summary

European traders before marco polo in the 13th century wanted to bring back chinese luxury and goods back to europe. From 15th to 18th centuries, china was at the centre of global lux trades; ceramics. Both societies of china + japan turned inwards over 17th - 18th centuries and tried to regulate their contact with foreign traders, political emissaries and missionaries. By the mid 18th century white people caught up to their tech and military might. Chinese people thought euros were uncultured barbarians, but white people were prepared to force an opening up of chinese and japanese markets on their own terms. Industrial revolution sped up the white people"s advantages over east asian societies which meant that by 19th century east asia could either open their societies and learn/adapt to european modernity or resist their incursions. Ruled in the 18th century; originally from manchuria, they held power since 1644 and a multicultural empire was made.
