Document Summary

Southern ontario was once the location of an inland sea. Much of the bedrock in hamilton is known as a dolostone cap - a few thick layers of had dolostone/limestone overlying softer shales and sandstones. The image below is a stratigraphic cross section, showing al the layers of rock through millions of years of deposition. This helps determine the pale environment of the area at the time in order to see how the environment of the region changed over time. Carbonate rock is particularly soluble and can create formations due to dissolved pockets or patches in the rock (termed karst formations) The niagara escarpment is a result of uneven physical, chemical and glacial erosion of limestone rocks over millions of years and many different types of rock. Landforms created from the dissolution of limestone by water erosion. Characteristic landforms include caves, waterfalls, sinkholes, underwater streams and cenotes.
