GEOG 2GI3 Lecture Notes - Contour Line, Quantile, Lake Ontario
Document Summary
Choropleth maps are the most common type produced in gis. Symbolization can be thought of as a matrix. First, you need to figure out what kind of data you"re trying to map. Symbolization: type is distinguished by the varying character of the line (thickness, colour, continuity). Examples: types of buildings: schools, fire stations, hospitals; types of settlements: villages, towns, cities. Distinctive colours can also be used - but do not use shades of a particular colour as this indicates shades of qualitative differences. e. g. box with a triangular flag on top is a school. Examples: size of settlements, proportion of french speakers. Symbolization: size or quantity is best distinguished by varying the size of the symbol. Intensity is best distinguished by shading the symbol (darker tones for greater intensity). Phenomena are of two types: continuous (temperature, precipitation, elevation) and discrete (production from mines, population of settlements). Examples: roadway congestion, political boundaries (national vs provincial).
