Slide 4: how have cities grown: significant process in europe and north america over the last century: rural to urban migration, e. g. Portland, oregon rapid growth of population (close to 1 million people: the growth of the city and making the city more livable (e. g. add parks) Slide 5: cities in developing world: more recent process; still evolving, more people in developing countries living in cities and less people in rural areas. In canada, it will be a problem: e. g. Canada cant find majors in small rural towns. Large tracks of land that are being developed and are left b/c people are always moving/relocating. Still impacted: e. g. paved over, land that(cid:495)s (cid:494)being waste(cid:495) Slide 7: uncoordinated land-use patterns, based upon car driven transportation, e. g. public transportation needs to cope with expansive growth. Impossible to improve buildings that use solar energy. Slide 10: more sustainable , natural open space, protection of wetlands, woodlands, stream valleys, habitat.
