Govt health organizations take 2-3 weeks to report illness and longer to disseminate trends (not effective) Increasingly people get (& share) much of their medical and health information from websites and social media (rather than medical professionals) Twitter is used for health related information and advice. 800, 000 tweets from gta collected over 5 weeks (oct-nov 2012) Filtered keywords, manually screened (ex: sick, flu, ill, cough, etc) By using twitter, we can manage to speed up the reporting times of illness. Through mapping see where outbreak originates, how it spreads and how long (etc. ) Predict patterns moving into the future see where it will spread next. Gis: computer based spatial analytical and map making tool, constantly evolving. Estimated revenue of billion, growing rate of 30% per year. Global positioning system - gis - remote sensing (gis uses both) Gis: manage, manipulate, analyze and visualize all types of geographic data.
