Types of conflict: civil wars & secessionist conflicts, the geography of terror. War = act of conflict by a state relatively recent: emergence of nationalism in the 18th c. The main forms of conflict involve: competition for territory (resources, etc. , rivalries between cultural groups, ideological differences (communism, liberal democracy, etc. , imbalances of power (colonial, economic power) The geographies of conflict exist at a number of spatial scales . The geographies of conflict: spatial scale: international. States vs. state conflict, e. g. the world wars. Alliances between states (i. e. nato: national/state. Conflicts within the boundaries of a state, e. g. civil wars: local. Sense of place: sites of commemoration: meaningful places for nations: sites of commemoration e. g. cenotaph, military cemeteries, monuments, etc. Conflict: five main categories/types: between states e. g. world war i & ii, vietnam; middle-east conflicts between israel and egypt, Lebanon, syria, etc e. g. u. s. ; african states, etc.
