Value of marine goods and services trillion annually. New species being found constantly: near hydrothermal vents, coastal areas, 2007: +230,000 species identified. Biomass pyramids are reversed in ocean systems compared to terrestrial: lots of primary consumers, few producers and tertiary consumers (blue whales) Pacific ocean ecozone: wintering ground for seabirds and marine mammals. Arctic basin ecozone: covered by permafrost, species live in margins of ice. Arctic archipelago ecozone: polynyas (areas of permanent open water, biologically productive areas, largest polynya is offshore of illesmere island. Northwest atlantic ecozone: higher temp than arctic but still covered in ice: area where seal hunt usually occurs. Atlantic ecozone: mostly ice-free, lots of seabirds and cold-adapted coral reefs (gorgonia coral, expected to be first coral to disappear with acidification of oceans) Jurisdiction largely held by federal government, coast guard, department of fisheries and oceans (manage commercial fisheries: provinces are responsible for shorelines and aquaculture, municipalities responsible for coastal zones (land-based activities, highly fragmented jurisdiction.
