Magnitude 5 is 10 times larger than magnitude 4 (energy released increased 32 times for each magnitude) The richter magnitude scale compensates for decreasing amplitude with increasing distance from the epicenter. The gap measures th8e time between s and p wave. Related to size of fault rupture and amount of seismic energy released. Similar values to richter"s scale, but more accurate measurements on seismographs can be measured in field. The large category earthquakes typically occur at subduction zones, plate on top that was flexed inwards snaps up creating tsunamis and a strong earthquake. Extent of destruction depends on depth of focus, rock types, proximity to population centers, types of structures and utilities affected, time of day etc. The mercalli intensity scale classifies the destructiveness of earthquake in 12 categories. Two similar earthquakes in iran and california had huge difference in death.
