Relationships development reflects the unfolding of social exchanges, so the rewards and costs as opposed to those ending it: we decide what kind of relationship we think we deserve, we decide our odds of doing better elsewhere . Feelings about relationships depend on perceptions of rewards and costs. The a"s attraction: occurs when 2 people become aware of and find another appealing or enticing. Self-disclosure: revelation of personal perhaps intimate information, gender differences in self-disclosure, women are only slightly more revealing than men. Factors that deter deterioration : putting energy into relationship. Reasons for ending relationships: when partners find little satisfaction in the affiliation, when barriers to leaving the relationship are low, when alternative partners are available. Dumpee feels the most distress following break up (especially if satisfied before break up) less distress if interested in another relationship: more distress if partner has alternatives available. Women feel more cheated on when their partners participate in emotional infidelity.
