Communication climate in interpersonal relationships: emotional tone of relationship, confirming messages show others they are valued. Conflict: can be positive if handled positively, can be helpful in a relationship. In science research conflict b/c haven"t resolved all issues. Its all based on how we handle conflict. Interdependence: the parties in a conflict are usually dependent on each other. Indirect communication: conveys a message in a roundabout manner, in order to save face for the recipient: assertion: expressing needs, thoughts, and feelings clearly and directly, without judging others or dictating to them. Characteristics of assertive messaging: describe behaviour (denial from the people, your interpretation of the other persons behaviour, description of your feelings, describe the consequences, statement of your intentions. Gender and conflict style are more likely to be overtly aggressive, demanding, and competitive es are more co-operative and less directly aggressive. Lose: one party achieves its goal at the expense of the other.
