Why theory is important: help us understand phenomenon that we see within world, are first years prepared for uni, helps academics & policy makers to challenge previous beliefs/notions, world was flat, humans are impacting climate. Signification: using signs to make meaning, sign anything w meaning (words, images, sounds, signifier aspect of sig we experience, signified idea or mental concept. Icon a sign that looks like the object it represents (e. g. map : city) Index a sign that is related to the object it represents (e. g. smoke : fire) Symbol a sign that has no direct resemblance to the object it represents (e. g. name : the actual person) A set of ideas about how the world is organized and functions; a representation of the social world. Not simply to understand the world but to change it. Attempts to understand the forces that give form and context to human communication. Encoding/decoding model exam: shared find of social institutions, knowledge & culture.
