Document Summary

Chemistry is about the stuff the world is made of/ Chem is only a couple of hundred years old. It used to be trial and error, now its more systematic. All reactions we will look at are aqueous of gaseous. Most elements are metals if brought to a high enough pressure. It is thought that the centre of jupiter may be metallic hydrogen. Group 1: react with metals to produce salt. Group 2: react more slowly with non metals. Salts of g i & ii are generally ionic. Ionic and covalent solids do not conduct electricity. Ionic liquids do conduct electricity (at high temperature) Covalent liquids (ie water) do not conduct electricity. However a dissolved metal halide (ionic salt) is conductive. Covalent compounds are non-electrolytes, and don"t conduct electricity. Percipitates occure when you combine solutions that create a non sosuble salt.
