BIOTECH 3PM3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Dosage Form, Subcutaneous Tissue, Starch
Document Summary
Mcmaster university bitoech 3pm3 pharmacology week 02. The physical and chemical properties of a drug will determine how affective it is. Compressed dosage form that include the medicinal active ingredients along with non-med. Used when drug is too irritating to subcutaneous tissue. The most common way for drugs to pass through biological membranes is via passive diffusion. Concentration gradient is the driving force for this process. As the surface area increase, the rate of diffusion increases (stomach vs small intestines) Depends on membrane, physiochemical properties of the drug. Lipophilicity is measuring the distribution between an immiscible phase and water. Ratio can be expressed by the partition coefficient. Most drugs are weak acids or weak bases. Only the unionized form will be able to go into the lipid phase. If a drug is ionized it will not be able to penetrate the phospholipid bilayer.
