Bungarotoxin: the banded krait snake bungarus multicinctus produces a 74-amino acid toxin to immobilize prey that blocks neurotransmission by irreversibly binding to nachrs- competitive inhibition- this toxin helped with initial puri cation of nach receptor protein. Curare: plant toxin extracted from chondrodendron tomentosum- also blocks nicotinic ach receptors via competitive inhibition. All three of the above ligands produce excitatory e ects. Other neurotransmitters can be inhibitory (i. e. act so as to prevent the cell from ring action potential) For these, the receptor is an anion selective channel (especially chloride)- when ligand is bound to receptor there is a selective increase in gcl. The concentration of chloride is greater in the ecf with the driving force being inward- hyperpolarization results. Ligand-gated anion channels regulated by the neurotransmitters gaba and glycine belong to a similar structural family of receptors as the nicotinic ach and 5-ht cationic receptors.
