Two cells close together (paracrin) or cell communicating with itself (autocrin) Hormones - travel in the blood to their effect on the target cell. Receptors - mediate cellular effect of the signalling agents. Influence the cellular response when an agent binds to the receptors. Similar to enzymes as well or ion channels. Effect of receptor binding on a cell - mag of response of cell is dictated by the amount of receptors on the cell initiating a response. Magnitude of response is dependent on the concentration of some messenger surrounding the cell. Affinity - response or number of receptors bound is dictated by the concentration of the messenger. Some receptors have high affinity - where low conc of the messenger is needed (ie 50% binding of the receptor) Sometimes it takes a higher concentration to lead to 50% binding. Floating in the cytoplasm or even in the nucleus (nuclear receptor)
