Document Summary

Bio 1a03 lecture 16 dna replication. In 1954, watson and crick proposed a hypothesis for dna replication and proposed that. Watson and crick hypothesized that when a cell copies its dna, each strand serves as a template for the ordering of new nucleotides into a complementary strand. Therefore, while replication of dna would be with one parent dna double helix, there would be two new helices by the end, with the new double stranded dna being an exact copy of the parental molecule. This model proposed that when dna replicates, each of the two daughter dna molecules will have one old strand from the parental molecule and one newly synthesized strand. This model was called the semiconservative model of dna replication: other researchers hypothesized that dna replicated in a conservative manner, with the two complementary parental strands coming back together after replication. Some hypothesized that all four strands combined into a mixture of old and new dna strands.
