Document Summary

Theme 5: module 3: sex chromosomes and linkage. Looking at inheritance is more complicated in humans than in peas (mendel"s experiment) 1 of the limitations is that humans do not tend to produce many offspring & it would not be ethical to ask people to breed simply to observe the outcomes of trait transmission. To avoid these limitations, geneticists looks at the family history for a particular trait & build a family tree or pedigree that allows for a visual representation of the segregation of the specific trait of interest. In a pedigree, males in the family are represented by squares & females by circles. If the pedigree is illustrating the transmission of a trait or disease from 1 generation to the next, then the symbols of affected individuals will usually be shaded in w a colour. Other pts of interest in a pedigree include illustrating matins as a single horizontal line b/n 2 related individuals.
