Lecture 9: theme 2 applied lecture 2 (cid:862)anti(cid:271)ioti(cid:272)s(cid:863) Discovery of antibiotics: fleming (1928) accidently comes back from vacation to find old dishes containing staphylococci, one dish he comes across, he notices there(cid:859)s a (cid:373)old (cid:894)penicillium colony) growing on the dish. Noticed that penicillium colony had cleared out and killed any of the staphylococcus growing around it (cid:894)(cid:858)ri(cid:374)g of death(cid:859)(cid:895: he identified that the mold was excreting a toxin which was killing the competing. Staphylococcus colony: years later, these toxins were used as antibiotics, penicillium was first antibiotic discovered. Interfering with cell wall synthesis a lot of the time it gets disintegrated: disrupting bacterial protein synthesis at the ribosome (disrupting translation) Inhibiting the function of enzymes needed for dna and rna synthesis done by microbial organism excreting toxin which interrupts functions of other cells. Stopping large ribosome subunit from attaching onto small ribosomal subunit and mrna would stop ribosome function: black ribosome exit tunnel.
