Narrative has a specific meaning in this course and for film analysis, should not be equated with fiction. Within the scope of this course the two terms have very different practical meanings story - the entire narrative of a film including all those events shown and all the events inferred by the film. Diegesis created story space of a film, the fictional universe in which the story unfolds narrative films consciously manufacture a fictional world into which they place a story. Most of the energy behind narrative films is spent creating and maintaining this world. Music is non-diegetic, part of the plot but separate from it traditional barrier is sometimes broken, breaking the 3rd wall. Citizen kane is different in story and plot duration, its story duration is 65 years (kane"s life) and 1 week (investigation) sometimes films match plot to screen duration like high.
