Race is antiquity: darker skin north, yellow egyptians, light south, you can adopt the greek culture if you were barbarian. Race and anthropology: social concept, not biological; there are no biologically distinction between human groups, concept of race continues; biomedicine, forensic anthropology, reinforce some groups while stigmatizing other ones. Key points on race as a concept: genetics does not support the classification of humans into discrete race, no one has distinct traits to represent a culture; scientifically indefensible! Bidil race in a bottle: targeted to african america, cannot target a drug to a specific race/population; controversial. Race refers to : the presumed hereditary characteristics of a group of people, a culturally/socially constructed identity. Race is also : used erroneously as a form of social stratification and legal classification, eg. Social stratification: unequal access to: wealth or economic resources (things that have value); Class is seen as: achieved or ascribed, the american dream!
