Gender Inequality
Research Proposals
• ased o oigial data olletio ad epiial aalsis
• Eaples: uestioaies, edia otet aalsis, aalsis of statistial data, igettes,
interviews
• Questioaie pesetig iages fo ads ad opaed esposes fo e ad oe
• Need a eseah uestios that ou a stud --> something you can get data for
Continuation of Violence and Rape
• Child Rape
• Both boys and girls are raped almost exclusively by men
• Majority are not what you would call a classic "pedophile"
• How common --> hard to estimate, 1/6 kids suffer from some form of sexual assault
• Studies looks at who's more likely to assault kids is family members (uncles, fathers,
grandfathers, brothers, etc.)
• Incest rape is not very rare --> very distorted perception of control and love
• Male Rape
• We do know that it exists and we think is mainly happens in prisons, which it is true that it
is more common in prisons
• Happens in families, homes, schools, army, restrooms, universities, work
• About half of the men who rape were victims of sexual assault in their own childhood
• Both heterosexual and gay men are rapists, almost at the same rate
• Hard to gage how much it occurs
• Estimates about 3% of men were sexually assaulted, but this might be an underestimate
due to stigma and feelings of shame (might be higher for men than women)
• Perpetrators are almost never women
• Most perpetrators do not define themselves as gay men, and self-identify as heterosexual
men
• Aguet that ape is losel oeted to seual attatio --> rape has to do with much
more than sexual attraction and not only about the relationship between men and women, but
the relationship between men --> rape being a means of humiliation
• Thee is soeties seual desie ioled, ut thee ae oe oties that e should
consider --> revenge, sadistic tendencies, showing hate for women, political subordination,
establishing control in family relationships (just as ruthless, violent and sadistic as stranger rapes
even within marriage), establishing a sense of entitlement, male bonding, proof of masculinity,
misogyny
Gender Inequality
• soe of the most fundamental inequalities that are at the base of inequalities around us
• Politial/ideologial stae --> women teach gender studies and ethnic studies are taught by
minorities
• These issues ae ot the pole of oe ad ioities ad they affect all of us --> not a
zero sum game
• Political point of view, it's important for us to recognize who we are and how these affect us
and not leave them to women and minorities to talk about
