Old regime and the french revolution: has fantastic social theory in it. Suffering like this is very great for you. In book 2 chapters 8-10 enormously important. Man of enormous passion: passion, above all, for liberty, you can sum up tocqueville in one word liberty. Family is old aristocracy: dates back to early middle ages. Town caricature of futile village: castle on the top. Comes from a noble background but a noble background that is relaly part of the new world: new wolrd not of commercial society but a new world of the french revolution. This affected him in every way he has an aristocratic background (comes from the old world) and is confronted with the new. His parents were arrested during the terror under robespierre: they survived by a night. His father, in 1815, returned from exhile. Joined the restoration (aka became loyal to monarchy (boubarn): became a member of the restored old regime (once napolean fell)
