Family is: primary source of meaningful relationships, primary source of intimacy and need fulfillment, fundamental- universal social institution (everyone) Meaning of a family varies and is fluid. Used to measure strength and commitment to each other. Family is a social group characterized by common residence, economic cooperation and reproduction, adults of both sexes (2 of whom have sexual relationships) one or more children. Much room for todays couples to not be included as a family . Majority of couples today would not be a family . A small kinship structured group with the key function of nuturant socialization of the newborn . Knowing who shares a dwelling, legal state of adults and children- who is responsible for financial, care and responsibility.
