Wolves: hierarchy with alpha male and female at the top. Humans: also have hierarchic social relations but different than social animals. Rank and social structure isn"t biologically determined. Creative intelligence: allows to organize social relations in variety of ways, with rank and hierarchy. Stratification: refers to hierarchical organization of social relations. Higher groups have more power, influence, resources and prestige. Inequality: related to stratification- stratification= collective forms of inequality. Omnipresence: all societies are unequal and stratified- different abilities/interests/oppor- tunities, but vary to which degree. Income inequality: top 1% of canadian earners made 12. 4% of total canadian income, top. 1% of americans earners make 24% of total us income. Gini coefficient: statistic way to measure inequality- ranging from 0 to 1 where 0 complete equality, 1= complete inequality. Quintiles: most common statistic of income inequality (dividing population into 5 groups on a chart) Wealth inequality: globally, top 1% owns 50% of world"s total assets.
