Kalaska and colleagues have recorded from purkinje cells and cells in interpositus and dentate during two joint arm movements in monkeys. The procedure was similar to that followed by georgopoulos. A sample of cerebellar neurons with proximal-arm receptive fields or discharge related to shoulder or elbow movements was studied. Finds in both places there"s a similarity in properties of neurons and the sort of population coding a neural population on average codes the direction of movement. The activity of this purkinje cell is displayed in raster (top), histogram (middle) format aligned on the onset of movement and also as a polar plot (bottom). Reciprocal cells such as this showed increases in activity during movement in one direction and a decrease in activity for movement in the opposite direction.
