He focused on purposive behaviour instead of the reflexive stuff. Instinct is an innate desire to attend to something, become aroused by it and respond to it. Most behaviour can be explained by instinct. we form habits in service of instinct. Einstein and freud were very similar in character and upbringing, but knew nothing of each others fields. Freud suggested a death instinct and said that one could not cure war because man is innately aggressive. Einstein suggested a council to resolve these things, but admitted that no one would really want to surrender to that.
