Lecture 12: Week 4 Class 2
What is covered today:
- Prosopagnosia
- Apperceptive Visual Agnosia
- Associative
- Central Achromatopsia
- Color Anomia
Readings:
- Milner, Corkin Teuber
- Milner, Psychlogical Sequire and Zola Moigan
- Petrides: Frontal L + memory+ working memory
Last class: May 29th Review: May 30th
Review:
- Map by Brodmann: 1st complete map of cerebral cortex
- Sarkisoff
- Long superior temporal sulcus: divides brain into superior temporal gyrus and
inferaltemporal cortex (Include inferior temporal gyrus and fusiform gyrus)
- In human, inferior temporal gyrus is very low in lateral surface; in medial surface, we see
fusiform gyrus, then we have the hippocampal gyrus.
o There are 5 gyri in human brain
- Visual areas: Base of the brain
- Different types of agnosia: (lesion is bilateral in monkey)
o Nowadays we accept various kind of visual problem we call agnosia.
o Monkey research enable us to understand the mechanism
1. Associative visual agnosia:
o Can see very well, can copy very ell, ut ould’t recognize them.
o He has perfet isio, ut a’t iterpret hat he sa
o Damage to front part of ventral stream
2. Apperceptive visual agnosia: difficulty with perception
o Not lid, they do’t hae daage to eyes or opti eres
o The damage is further back of the temporal lobe. Enough occipital and
temporal, but the later processing stages have been destroyed
- Compare associative visual agnosia and apperceptive visual agnosia:
o patient with assoiatie isual agosia a’t reogize/ iterpret subject, they
a tell to ojets are the sae or differet, ut do’t ko hat they are;
they a’t ae it eause the teporal loe, hih oets to other parts of
the brain, is damaged.

Document Summary

Petrides: frontal l + memory+ working memory. Map by brodmann: 1st complete map of cerebral cortex. Long superior temporal sulcus: divides brain into superior temporal gyrus and inferaltemporal cortex (include inferior temporal gyrus and fusiform gyrus) In human, inferior temporal gyrus is very low in lateral surface; in medial surface, we see fusiform gyrus, then we have the hippocampal gyrus: there are 5 gyri in human brain. Enough occipital and temporal, but the later processing stages have been destroyed. 2: patient with apper(cid:272)epti(cid:448)e (cid:448)isual ag(cid:374)osia (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t see the shape very well, they are (cid:271)lurry, therefore, they (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t tell the differe(cid:374)(cid:272)es (cid:271)et(cid:449)ee(cid:374) the t(cid:449)o o(cid:271)je(cid:272)ts (cid:271)e(cid:272)ause they (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t see (cid:448)ery (cid:449)ell. Faces are in a spetial category, not because they are faces, because visual facial demand is high. There is only slight difference between faces, therefore we can tell this is (cid:373)y (cid:373)other"s fa(cid:272)e or (cid:373)y father"s fa(cid:272)e. Investigator kanwisher did fmri, when student looking at fmri, fusiform gyrus is active.
