PSYC 304 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Bird Feeder, Coffeemaker
Document Summary
They were looking at infants" perception of categories based on features/characteristics. They showed dot shapes (geometric shapes) that were slightly distorted. They wanted to see if the kids would make prototypes in their heads based on these distorted shapes (in the training) Were trained with triangles, squares, circles, and + shapes. They see some with fat lines, some that are a bit disjointed, some that are made up of dots. There is always a slight variation for each shape they never see the exact same variation of the shape (there are about ten variants of each shape) This would not be the same as distortion because there is much less changes between the varied shape and the prototype shape in this study than in the last one we looked at. You train the kids on the different variants of a given shape.
