The experimenter shows a facial expression 4-6 times and then they videotape the baby for 50 seconds to see whether or not the baby imitates this expression. 3 things to imitate: tongue protrusion, happy face, mmmm" sound. There were no significant differences versus some control gestures and there were significant differences versus some other control gestures. The kid sees the adult sticking their tongue out. The experimenter measures whether or not the baby also does the tongue protrusion (more than they produce the sound eeee" for example) They test how frequently the baby imitates the gesture that was shown to them before versus a control gesture (e. g. , lip protrusion any gesture that was not a part of the study otherwise) Because they do not do tongue protrusion for every gesture that the experimenter presents to them (tongue protrusion or not)
