The tendency to attribute people"s behaviour to their personality or other internal factors. Even when powerful situational forces may influence behaviour. We more commonly blame behaviour on the person rather than the situation. Tendency to over-emphasize the role of dispositional factors. Failure to recognize the importance of situational influences on behaviour. Example: jamie foxx saving someone from a burning truck. Many people would have behaved the same way in this type of situation. Participants read an essay about fidel castro"s communist regime in cuba. Participants thought that those who wrote about pro, believed in that and vice versa. Participants still thought that those who wrote about pro, believed in pro and vice versa (slightly less) Did knowledge of free choice vs. assigned topic influence judgements of essay writer"s attitudes. The essays were very well written so participants may have believed that the writer believed in what they were writing. Subtle hints that people do not fully agree with their statements.
