Document Summary
The experience about thinking about the self involves two parts: Put a mirror in a room with chimpanzees for 10 days to observe what would happen. The chimpanzees thought there was another chimpanzee in the room with them; days later, chimpanzees began to recognize their reflection in the mirror. Applied a rouge (lipstick) mark on the forehead of some chimpanzee and left some alone and faked putting on a mark (control). Measured how often the chimpanzees touched their forehead over a period of time when exposed to a mirror. Experimental condition group touched their forehead far more often (25x). Distinguish between self and environment ex: food; basic sense of own being puts food in own mouth instead of the ground/doesn"t chew on hand to feed self. Simple representation of self ex: rouge test; aware of existence. Going through life developing a complex representation of who we are, learning, piecing things together and trying to become who we want to be.
