Document Summary

Overview: what is light, manipulating light with lenses and filters, the structure of the human eye, optics of the eye, nearsightedness, farsightedness, and presbyopia. What is light: a beam of particles, a wave like sound, a wave like radio, a wave with magnetic properties, a wave with electric properties, something magical. Electromagnetic radiation: this is a schematic diagram of what a travelling wave of light would look like. It has 2 orthogonal components: magnetic, electric, these two are oscillating in phase but in different planes. If you decrease the wavelength or frequency, you get into microwaves, etc: shrink the wavelength = more dangerous waves like x-rays and gamma rays. Figure 8. 2: because the speed of light is constant, it"s easier to describe it in terms of its wavelength in a unit called lambda, we can measure light in nm scale, visible spectrum range = 400-450nm 700nm. Which color is associated with the shortest wavelength: green, red, blue, purple , yellow.
